It would he a rather pood thing if Holland were to move to that country the Boer women and children now being fed and tended at the cost of the British Government. The latter would he saved “ynei'diVdle, aim the adults among the former would be restored to the realities of life.. That is to say when once they reached Holland, they would soon be told that eating and drinking involved working. If that caused discontent, as doubtless it would, Holland could arrange to send them to the Dutch Hast Indies, where for half a century she has been waging war on her own account with varying success. More than 3000 persons have been lvnched in the United States in the past twenty years. In 1892, which wa« the worst year on record, there were no fewer than 286 cases of lynching. The Bush Electrical and Engineering Company, which installed tho electricity at Rotorua, has furnished the Carterton Council with proposals for supplying light and motive power to the town. The engineer does not think it advisable to use water-power to drive the generating machinery, and recommended that a steam plant be placed in the centre of the town. He estimates the total cost of installation at £'3ooo. This provides for power equal to 1000 eight-candle power lamps. Assuming that only 1200 are required at one time for street-lighting—twenty lamps of -fifty-candle power, twenty chains apart—the cost of maintenance is calculated at £9OO par year, and the estimated revenue —at £1 per lamp or the equivalent in wer—ie £ISOO,
