LICENSING BENCH.

Tiib quarterly meeting of the Waiapu Licensing Committee was held yestorday. Present: Messrs W. A. Barton (Chairman), Bellerby, A. M. Gray, Hepburn, and Mrs Siovwright. No complaints had boen received by the police against any licensed liouso during tho quarter. Constable Kennedy (Wairoa) reported that tho improvements in the Ferry Hotel, ordered by the Licensing Committee, had not been completed, but the contractor was hard at work, and nearly all the material was on tho ground. A further extension of time to the quarterly meeting in March would be necessary. With regard to the Hot Springs Hotel, owing to the difficulty in getting material, the stablo ordered had not boon built. An extension to next quarterly meeting was recommended.—Extensions were granted to Ist March.

Constable Donovan (Tolago Bay) reported that tho improvements to the Pakarae Hotel had been satisfactorily completed, excepting tho horso trough. The licensee explained that if he sunk a well before January he could not go deep enough. Extension of timo granted. The following transfers were granted : Kawakawa Hotel, Reid McCulloch (Mr Nolan) to Thomas MeLachlan; Tolago Bay Hotel, William Frederick Sinclair (Mr Jones) to George Watkins; Tatapouri Hotel, William Bailey (Mr Nolan) to Cloment Henry Burdett. Application for a conditional license, Matawhero saleyards, for tho 19th inst., by John Aislabie was granted. An application was made to extend timo for the erection of the Argyll Hotel by George Oman, licensee, and the owners, Henry Williams and Alice Georgina Sherratt.—Mr Lysnar, for applicants, asked that the time be extended six months.—lt was decided to extend the time till the next quarterly meeting; if satisfactory reasons were given a further extension could bo obtained. Application for an extension of time for the erection of tho Gisborne Hotel by J. Martin, owner, was granted till next quarterly meeting, also for rebuilding the British Empire Hotel (Mr Jones appeared in support). An application for extension of time to make alterations in the Rangitira Hotel, and for permission to George How Chow to carry on in the absence of the licenseo. Mr Jones asked for an extension till tho 31st January.—Sergt. Siddells asked that a final arrangement be eome to as to carrying on. The present state of affairs was hardly fair to the police, or tho licensee, who was responsible.—Mr Jones said he understood tho 31st January would be the final extension applied for.—Granted, on condition that the extension to 31st January was final.

Sergeant Siddells, as to the Murewai Hotel, said he had not prepared the report, owing to his absence. —Mr Gray said the stables had been commenced.
