THE AWAKENED NORTH.
REPLY BY MR HALL-TONES. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night. Mr Fowlds, M.H.R., has received a reply from tho Hon. Hall-Jones, stating that tho number of men discharged from tho northern end of tho Main Trunk railway was 200. llcnco Mr Fowlds’ estimate of nearly 000 was 50 per cent. out. “ Whero then,” asks tho Minister, “ was the quibble ?” Auckland had not beon singlod out for peculiar treatment in this matter. Ho considered that Mr Fowlds
ought not to havo made tho suggestion of OH financial tightness, as it would be wrongly construed. In conclusion Mr Hall-Jones states : “ I know the works I havo in hand, and also the amount set apart for tho sovoral works, and intend to uso tho money voted to the best advantage. 1 certainly do not intend to havo men working up to their knees in mud. It is not necessary, and will not be done, and I know I am correct in saying that, especially in Auckland district, my authorities will bo more fully expended than for many years past. I sincerely hope we shall havo no more of these unfounded assertions.”
