THE WAIMATE FIRE.
COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED. BIG BILLS TO PAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, last night. The fire on the Waimate was completely extinguished at 5 o’clock this morning. Since then the engines have been engaged in pumping ''the water out of the hold, but all the fire-engines are now ashore, and tho steamer's pumps are finishing the work. No estimate of the damage can, of course, be formed until the cargo in Nos. 4 and 5 holds is all out, and this cannot be completed until the water has been got out. It is expected, however, that the vessel will get away to-morrow or Sunday for Auckland, where she will be docked. It is understood that the enquiry into tho origin of the fire will be commenced to-morrow,
The oxpensu of extinguishing the fire has been very heavy, the Spit Fire Brigade receiving ,£4OO, and the owners of the Ahuriri £6OO. It is fortunate that the fire broke out while the stoamer was in port, as had it occurred at sea the steamer would probably have been a total loss.
