Nineteen persons were killed, and property valued at kalf-a-milhon dollars destroyed at Philadelphia on October-o. The buildings destroyed were an eighthstorey structure occupied by upholsterors and furniture-dealers, and a three-sto.cj structure occupied by small merchants. The fire started in the basement of the furniture-factory, presumably by the Uniting of some inflammable Squids. Most of those killed were at work on the sixth floor of this building, where women were engaged in sewing. They «ere 111 the rear of the building tloso to the incescapes, but becamo confused by the smoke, which came up the stairway and elevator-shafts in dense clouds. A aumbcr jumped from the eighth-storey, »nd were killed by being crushed on the sidewalk below. Only the most desperate efforts on the part of the Fire Department prevented the spread of the fire to the adjoining buildings, which were crushed by the falling walls, and to the buildings on the opposito side of the street, which were considerably injured by intense heat.
