With the assistance of the fire engine, the fire was prevented from spreading to adjacent buildings. • Wellington, last night. A benefit given by the united theatrical talent in the city to the sufferers by the Oriental Hotel fire was a brilliant success. The amount already accounted for is over £l4O.
The Supremo Court criminal sittings commenced this morning, 'Judge Edwards presiding. His Honor, in charging the Grand Jury, said the calendar was light, only fifteen persons being arraigned, but most of the cases were of a very serious character, including two of attempted rape. A Royal salute was fired this morning, in honor of (Jueen Alexandra’s birthday. The Wellington centre of the League of Wheelmen have decided to disband, as only one club is remaining under its jurisdiction.
Dunedin, last night. The Agricultural Department lws arranged, on behalf of various firms, to ship to South Africa by the Otamar in a few days about 8000 head of frozen poultry and several thousand eggs. On dit, that Mr Taverner will bo the Ministerial candidate for Caversham. A fire occurred this afternoon at Hooper's furniture mart, in the Octagon. A good deal of damage was done before the fire was got under.
