CIVIL SERVANTS.

WEEDING OUT THE WEAK ONES, (Special to Times.)

Wellington, last night.

As is pretty well known there is quite a small army of extra clerks attached to various Government offices, who, it has always been understood, have had to exist upon a regulation wage of ten shillings a day and the liability to get fired out at any time without compensation, but it appears that the idea is a mistaken ono. Lately a eloarauco has been made in some departments of men whose physical condition rendered them unfit for active work. Among them was discovered an “extra” who had been in the service for something like a score of years. The Governmentapparently considered that ho had particular claims to consideration, and ho lias been retired with a cheque for LIOO as compensation. That this may not occur again it is understood that instructions have been issued to heads of departments to weed out as speedily as possible all extra clerks who are likely to develop into invalids or become entitled to compassionate allowances when their term of usefulness is considered at an end.
