The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, NOVEMBER 28, 1901. MAJOR WINTER.
We have the pleasure of congratulating that grand soldier, Captain Wintor, on his promotion to the rank of major, and command of No. 4 Battalion (Wellington) East Coast Mounted Rilio Volunteers. Advice to that effect was received yosterday from Colonel Newall. The appointment will "be hailed with delight by all who have any knowledge of Captain Winter as an officer, than whom no man has better control over his men. He is a strict disciplinarian, but is always respected and esteemed by those under his command. Ho received his first commission in the volunteers in January, 1872, in the East Coast Mounted Rifles ; after that ho was in command of the “ J ” Battery of Artillery, and afterwards of the East Coast Hussars, and later on, up to the present, of the East Coast Mounted Rifles. He is entitled to, and intends to apply for a long-service medal, and also the Imperial Volunteer decoration. His position as commander will require periodical trips to Napier, tho forces under his control, in addition to those locally, being the Ruahine (Danevirkc), Hastings, Ahuriri, and Huramua (Wairoa) Mounted Rifles.
