A FATAL SHOT.
AN OPEN VERDICT RETURNED.
THE MATE ARRESTED.

Auckland, last night. Yesterday, a fatality hapoenod or! board the barquentiue Senoriti, anchored at Kennedy’s Ba.v, when George Buries, boatswain, was shot by a revolver. At tbo inquest to-day, Captain James Farrell said be heard a shot fired, and went from his cabin to the poop to soo ivnat the shooting was about. Deceased told him he was firing at some birds. The captain went back to the cabin, leaving the mate and deceased together. Shortly afterwards ho head a second shot, and the mate went down to the cabin, and said “My God ! I have shot the boatswain. Come on deck and look.” He found Buries lying on tho deck. He asked him what was the matter. Deceased answered, “ I urn done for.” These were tho only words he spoke. He died within half an hour.
Dr Cheescman made a post mortem examination, and found that a bullet had entered the right side, cutting through tho entrails and arteries, and lodging in theskin on the left side.
The jury returned the following verdict r “ That deceased met his death by a revolver bullet wound on the barquo Senorita. on tho 21th inst., but. there was no evidence to show who fired the shot.”
Constable Shaw arrested the mate, Sydne.y G. Symons.
