VOLUNTEERS FOR SOUTH AFRICA.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —I still maintain that more volunteers (mounted men and good shots) are wanted out there, not cooks, and generally useful or useless as some have turned out after pushing aside better men than themselves. I venture to say that if the Government of this’colony ask, aye, even now, with Christmas close on us, that no difficulty would be found in raising a contingent from the whole of New Zealand, of, say, 600 capable men to iiil the gaps caused by illness ami death, and those of our noble follows who have through the blunders of commanding officers beenmade prisoners. It has been acknowledged by friends and foes that our colonial soldiers have done yeoman service, and many have bravely met a soldier’s death. All honor to them ! And federated Australia could swell the numbers to 3,700, to saynothing of patriotic Canada, which has offered men recently. I am, etc., Volunteer.
