THE BOWLERS.
EXPLANATION BY MR BALLINGER (Special to Times.) Wellington, last night.
A returned member of the New Zealand team of bowlers which played in England, Scotland, and Ireland, Mr Thomas Ballinger, of Wellington, states that tho reason for tho defection of the New Zealanders from the Australasian team was due to a misunderstanding in the first instanco that this colony and the Australian States were sending rinks which, though playing as a combined team, would retain their individuality. The Australians, however, insisted that tho rinks should be jumbled up together. Tho Now Zealanders contended that this would weaken tho teams as a whole and destroy all chances of success, so they dropped out, and decided to play purely as a Now Zealand team. In order that the matches should not clash they went to Scotland, while the Australians played in England. Tho results, Mr Ballingor contends, showed tho wisdom of individualising tho colonies. Tho colonies parted in a friendly spirit. There is no justification for the recent cabled statement that the Now Zealanders acted selfishly.
