GIFT TO BADEN-POWELL.

SrEECII BY Mli CHAMBERLAIN

SOLIDITY OF ANGLO-SAXON

RACE,

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright

London, Nov. 7. The occasion of the presenting of a sword to General lladen-Powcll produced a remarkable outburst of popular enthusiasm. There was a large colonial company and the Agents-General present, Mr Chamberlain presiding. Tho tribute, ho said, was a new proof of the solidity of the Anglo-Saxon race. The great colonies had now become powerful states of ono great nation. They shared our hopes, objects, and sacrifices with a prescience he wished everybody in Great Britain had shared. They foresaw at tho outset the greatness of tho issue, realising that it was a struggle which imperilled the existence of race supremacy. Had Great Britain dalliod, not listening to the appeal of fellow subjects. it would have lost fciouth Africa, and forfeited the respect of the sister nations whoso goodwill and esteem it was the main object of statesmanship to maintain and strengthen. Wo were not entitled, nor wished, to make a settlement rendering futile tho sacritices and sympathies of our kinsfolk, and not securing to the fullest degree tho object both had in entering the struggle. General Baden - Powell, responding, modestly, but warmly, accepted the honors, which ho said he shared equally with brave companions.
