HARBOR BOARD.

iTo the Editor of the Times.) Sn;, —The Harbor Board will have to be careful of its finances. The Engineer is face to face with Mr Nelson’s estimate as of clearing the river, .and I to the ° -;n „,. I]Ve qjmsnlf hope that the Engineer w... ~ L more worthy cf having C.E. aiier Ins name than Mr Nelson claims the right to from experience. One fact appears to me to have been overlooked by the Engineer, and that is that the whole of the silting up complained of by Mr Nelson has, to my mind, been caused by the putting of Stull' into the river and obstructing the river by leaving the residuum stranded in the centre, and principally by die unsuccessful damming of the creek, which has caused the scour of the creek into the river. This obstruction of the creek has cost the County Council a bridge and lost the travelling stock a good drinking place. Instead of the Harbor Board spending their money in dredging the river for Messrs Nelson, the Board should insist on Mr Nelson putting the river bank in the state it was in before his works were started here. The Board’s Engineer might have reported on this to the Board. He lias a contract on hand to justify such a report as he sent in. If he clears the river at the price he mentions, enquiry will i possibly be made why has previous drudging been so slow and expensive.—l am, 1 etc., Looker On.
