WELLINGTON NEWS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A full Bench of the Supreme Court this morning made a new departure in legal rules by deciding that our Public Works Act of 1894 is quite distinct from the English Act, which w-as hitherto followed. Compensation may be given for any injury by construction and working of a line, less any increased value from increased convenience and access. This decision gives larger scope to claims for compensation under the Public Works Act than under the English law. According to the ruling full compensation is due to any person who stands affected by public works. This judgment was given in a case of legal points in dispute sent up from the Compensation Court, in which W C. Fitzgerald claims damages from the Kirori Tramway Company.
UNIMPROVED VALUES.
A poll of ratepayers at Petone on the proposal to introduce rating on unimproved values resulted in 100 for, and 135 against the proposal ; therefore it was rejected.
CHILD DROWNED.
The eighteen-months old child of Tbos. Pierson was accidentally drowned at Petone beach to-day.
