Tlio Czarina asked the proprietor of the shop if she conld oscapo by’ the back way, and was told that the back entrance was boarded up, owing to building operations. The Czarina, nothing daunted, ordered a ladder to be placed against the wall of the yard, over which, greatly delighted, she clambered into an adjoining garden, whence she made her way • unobserved through side streets to the castle.
