The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, OCTOBER 20, 1901. DIGNITY OR BUSINESS?
Xiu: Sydney Times plainly informs Mow / aland that if it desires anything in the way of a reciprocal tariff with the Commonwealth Now Zealand must be prepared to retaliate on account of the federal tariff brought into force. The advice is that wo must not be concerned about our dignity where our poc.ets are concerned, ami that if wo wish to obtain consideration we must be prepared to make the Commonwealth smart in some ways. \\ e do not think that the advice of the Sydney journal is likely'to be accepted, for New Zealand has (piito enough on hand without engaging upon a war of tariffs with the sister States. The best thing is to trv and make the Australian people pay for anything put oil New Zealand goods. That will not work out in all cases, but whenever there is a shortage of supplies it should bo the consumer who has to pay the difference in cust. It might be necessary later on for New Zealand to adopt reprisals, but at present this colony’s best plan is to pay' no special attention to what has been done, and trust that in the future the position may bo more advantageous to this colony.
