POLLARD OPERA COMPANY.
■ “ LA POP PEE." Tuf.hk was again a crowded house at the Theatre Royal last night when the Pollard Opera Company played “ La Poupee.” Though under considerable disadvantage in regard to the staging of such a piece in Gisborne, the company did remarkably well, and the favorite play was considered the greatest success of the season. The part of Alexia (the Doll) was taken by Miss May Beatty, who has achieved a great name for herself in that character. Her playing of the part was very much admired, and hearty approval was given by the enthusiastic audience. The singing and acting were alike splendid. Mr W. S. Percy, as Hilarius the doll-maker, represented the character with much spirit, and put plenty of fun into it. His “all my work ” was hit off each time in an intensely funny way. The character of Lancelot the novice was exceptionally well taken by Mr C. Carter, whose lino voice is a great aid to him. lie was always sure of an encore, and in the duets with Miss Beatty was especially successful. The part of the Baron was ably filled by Mr Alf. Stevens, with Mr (Juealy as his friend. Mr D. O'Connor filled the role of Father Mazime, the chief monks being Messrs C. Albert, G. Young, and L. Stone. Miss Metcalfe took the character of Madame Hilarius, and Miss Karkeek that of the apprentice. The performance was a splendid success in every respect.
To-night “The Gay Parisiannc " will be played, by request. The season concludes to-morrow night.
