A shepherd employed at Avoea, Tas-
mania, was driving some sheep in from one of the runs recently when ho was surprised bv the sudden appearance of a big native tiger. The animal quickly made off, but Sampson pui’sucd him in hot haste. The animal quickly made off, but Sampson pursued him in hot haste. The animal soon got away, but by the aid of a dog his whereabouts were again discovered. The brute turned to attack the horse, but the plucky rider despatched it with a thick stick. The tiger is said to bo one of the largest specimens ever seen in Northern Tasmania.
If the Premier only worked eight hours a day, and wero paid an extra rate for all excess of this period, his overtime would bring him in a small fortune. His banner may boar an inscription of an eight hours’ day on the side which he presents to the public; but on the side which faces himself the period should be put at sixteen hours. If example be better than the precept of his labour legislation the progressive worker in this land ought to give a decided preference to sixteen hours. However, the new Act will make really no practical difference to the average employer or the average worker. The excess of oight hours in a day’s labour has usually been paid for as overtimo in the past—and is likely to continue on that basis for the future.—Exchange.
It ia scarcely necessary (says a Wanganui paper) to remind our readers that the practice of throwing orange peel, banana skins and the like on the footpath is a dangerous and reprekonsible practice ; but it may not be generally known that to do so is a breach of the Borough by-laws. Such, however, is the case. As a result of the Federal tariff, the Mataura Ensign understands that a wellknown firm of millers in that province, which exports large quantities of oatmeal, is seriously considering the advisableness of dismantling its mill and re-erect-ing it somewhere in Australia, to escape the prohibitive duty on oatmeal. Men who get on in the world never limit themselves to an eight hours day’s work; and they never will, in spite of all the Acts of Parliament which the Premier may pass for his supporters, but which be himself and those who serve under him will not be bound by. Neither in the
spirit or the letter will the Premier permit labour legislation to shackle himself or the departments under him. He swears off everybody else but retains himself that liberty of action which he denies to others. In this Colony we have ever had an emht hour day. " We recollect the humble settlers in the sixties. He would work for, say. a Road Board the legitimate eight hours at the then current rate of eight shillings a day, and after tea would put in another fou/hours on his own section. GOOD MEDICINE.
If you espect to conquer in the battle of to-day, You will have to blow your trumpet in a tirm and steady way. The man that owns his acres is the man that plows all day, And the mac that keeps a humming is the man that’s here to stay. But the man who advertises with a sort of sudden jerk Is the man who blames the printer because it didn't work. The man that gets the business uses brainy printer's ink, Not a clatter or a splutter, but an ad. that makes you think; And he plans his advert'sements as be plans his well-bought stock, And the future of bis business is as solid as a rock. “ All that glitters is not gold,” A proverb old and true, Neither is a cough or cold What it appears to you. Do not treat it lightly, for 'Tis better to be sure, That you suffer never more, Get Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure,
