The friends of Mr T. B. Strong will bo pleased to hear that that gentleman has been appointed assistant-master at the Wanganui District High School. Mr 11. Hill, Inspector of Schools, commenced his examination of the Gisborne school yesterday. Mr lan S. Simson, District Valuer, returned to town on Sunday from tho Waiapu County, where lie has during tho past three weeks been engaged in making a careful valuation of properties.
Mr 0. Tilliard Natuseh arrives from-. Napier to-morrow morning. Mr 11. Danvers, handicappcr, and Mr C. O’Connor, starter for tiie Poverty Bay Turf Club, arrive to-morrow.
Tho Rev. Father Cahill, formerly of Gisborne, lias been appointed to take chargeof the Soutli Wairarapa district, and will be stationed at Carterton.
Mr 11.l 1 . M. Thomson, Inspector of Agencies for the Equitable Lite Insurance Company, arrives in Gisborne tomorrow.
Mr C. S. Kensington, the gentleman appointed by the Government to make a survey of the Motu bush and to report thereon, arrived at the Motu last week.
Madame Melba asked for .£SOO per night from Mr Williamson for an Australian tour. Air Williamson figured it out that with other artists engaged to support Madame the expenses would to close on .£9OO a night, so stopped negotiations. It is, however, on the cards that some other arrangement may be come to whereby Madame Melba will he able to make her long-talked-of tour of Australia, her native land.
Mr Thomas "Ballinger, of Wellington, who went over to America last month, claims to have boon the first passenger who passed over the landing stage of the new mammoth White Star steamer Celtic, on whose maiden voyage he travelled across the Atlantic. ” She is indeed a most splendid ship,” said Mr Ballinger. '' But not so fast as some of the other Atlantic liners. We were much delayed by fog. So we were on the return trip, which I made in the Oceanic, the second largest vessel in the world. By-the- bye," continued Mr Ballinger, “ Mr Steel, ticchief officer of the Oceanic, married Miss K. Crease, of Wellington, so, as Captain Cameron, the commander of tiie Oceanic,, married .Miss AI. Martin, also ot' Wellington, you see both the captain, and first mate have New Zealand wives, both of Wellington too.
