AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
’FRISCO MAIL SERVICE. (Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. Referring to the 'Frisco mail service the local Opposition paper, in its leader, says judging from his conduct during the light over over the mails question, an outsider would really imagine MrSeddon to be the most retiring ami weak-kneed leader that the waves of chance over Lluug up to Premiership, hut to us who know him, is he ? We most sincerely hope that tho question is not yet settled, that wiser counsels will rule in tho colony, and that wo shall not he landed in tiie unfortunate position of having lost a magnificent mail service that others covet, and acquired an indifferent mail service that nobody else seems to want. Southern Chambers of Commerce, at this very time, aro passing resolutions urging the opening up of new markets. Yet last night our Parliament took a great step towards closing up a market which bids fair to become, if fostered, our best and most profitable. A POPULAR PRESIDENT. At a meeting of the Auckland Builders' Association held on Saturday morning, tiie members present took occasion to wish God-speed and good luck to the President of the Association, Mr .). J. Holland, who is leaving for Gisborne to carry out a contract which will necessitate his remaining in Gisborne for sometime. A PROSPEROUS CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club the Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, congratulated the members on the success of the past season, and recommended that in view of the satisfactory position of the club the stakes during the ensuing year should be increased to the utmost limit consistent with the prudent administration of the club's funds. He also referred to the desirability of adopting the recommendation of the committee with reference to introducing the two dividend system, which he considered in time would he universally adopted by racing clubs throughout the colony, and to the wisdom of the committee in effecting the purchase of the property on which the club's meetings are held. Dr. Laing seconded, and the report and accounts were adopted. The profit and loss account showed that the recepts for the year had been £BBB7 18s fid. and tho expenditure £76159 IBs 7d, leaving a surplus of £1248 4s Bd. The customary 5 per cent, deduction had not been made. GISBORNE RACEHORSES.
Mr J. A. Harding’s pair of racehorses Tauhei and Matcroa are entered for the chief events at the Auckland Spring Meeting, and if in anything like their old form, should run well forward. Tauhei, with the handy impost of 7.12, must have a great chance in the City Handicap. “ Phieton,” in Saturday's Herald, on the race, says ; —“ Out of an original entry of 28 for tho mile and a-quarter race only nine horses have been paid up for. Xo doubt some will seek to place the cause of this poor acceptance at the door of the hundicapper, but it must be said in justice to Mr Evett that other causes have militated to reduce the field. For instance, neither liohoro nor Coronet aro ready ; Rosella is “ off ; ” Nopette is engaged in the Guineas, run on the same day ; and that anything lower down the list was unfairly treated is a point I fail to discover ; and, viewing the question in all its bearings, I think the City Handicap acceptances can be cited as one of the bad pieces of luck that now and again come to the handicapper. Though the City Handicap field has dwindled down ta nine, that number should furnish a good race should they all go to the post, for the issue is pretty open as between four at least.” A MIXER INJURED.
j A miner named Archibald Campbell met with painful and serious injuries whilst at work in the Broken Hill mine at Waiomo yesterday through the premature explosion of a charge of gelignite. Campbell was engaged at tho time in charging a hole with gelignite, when, from some ■ unaccountable cause, an ex-plosion took place, with the result that he sustained a compound fracture of the left arm, and his right arm was also severely bruised. In addition, he received ragged cuts on the chin and forehead, and one of his eyes was also bruised, although the sight was not injured, and ho was considerably peppered about the chest with sti'Ml pieces of gravel. The injured man, who is suffering considerable front the shock, was brought in to the hospital, where bis injuries were attended toby Dr Aubin. He is now doing as welt as can be expected.
