TWO OF CHEW CHARGED WITH CASTING AWAY VESSEL.

ACCUSED REMANDED TO CHRIST CHURCH.

The two men Kerry and Treko have been remanded to Christchurch in custody of Detective MeOrath and Constable McLeod, who produced the original warrants and identified the accused. When charged to-day with casting away, in company with others, the yacht Ariadne, accused declared themselves innocent of tnu charge. Detective Guuldcr deposed that when he arrested the accused he took possession of Treke's portmanteaux, and amongst the contents was a book containing what purported to be a conversation between Trcke and Capt. Mumford in reference to alleged blackmail of T. 0. Kerry relating to the wreck of the yacht Ariadne. Treko said *' Yes, that is true, and the whole of it is in my own handwriting.'’ Ho afterwards denied the writing. Amongst Kerry's effects witness found some letters and a packet of papers marked •* Mumford’s papers; don't open till you roach London.” lie also found a day-book referring to the payment of X'ldl to Capt. Mumford in various sums.
