Mr G. Ij. Greenwood, speaking oh the subject of gambling, at the annual meeting of the Christian Social Union, said that what had, in sporting parlance. “ choked him otf ” race meetings was the information conveyed to him on one occasion that all the races with the exception of the Hack Pace, had been arranged for beforehand, and those behind the scenes knew what horse would win a certain race.
The market for Australian goods is increasinf in New Zealand meanwhile, and, in the event of this tariff getting through, the Federal Legislature unamended, New Zealand may consider the question of retaliating with a similar prohibition of Australian goods. It is evident that there is no possibility of any reciprocal arrangement with the Federal Government. The whole spirit of the tariff is opposed :o any such idea,-and we can only make reprisals. This much Mr Seddon hinted at in Parliament last night, and if the tariff is not modified this Is a method of dealing with the question which will appeal to most protectionists. Many freetraders will also be able to reconcile their consciences to such a course in the present instance. It is evident that an endeavor has been made ro boycott New Zealand.
