Air Glass, the organising secretary of ; the Farmers’ Union (says the Wellington j correspondent of the New Zealand Herald) has just returned from a Southern tour, I during which he and Mr Fisher have been ; organising the farmers and spreading the mana of the body they represent. Air Glass reports having met with most encouraging success among both holders of large estates and small farmers. Since August 12th, Otago, Southland, Canterbury and Nelson have been thoroughly “ done ” in the interests of the union, and j the result is an addition of about 60 j
j branches, representing, say, five thouj sand members. This gives the union ! a total membership of close on j 20.000 members, distributed over about I 200 branches throughout- the colony. No j wonder the Premier begins to realise that I the farmer is becoming a power in the laud. Air Glass is satisfied from the J spirit shown at the various meetings that j the farmer has determined to make his j wants known, and he says the feeling is | quite as strong in the South as it is in j the North. It is the intention of Mr Glass to make a house-to-house canvass from the North Cape to the Bluff, and as soon as the union has a membership of 50,000 it is intended to call the Colonial Council tgether. This event will probably take place in May next.
