Mr Allsopp, the well-known civil engineer, was conducting experiments at the Engineer Foundry, Newcastle, with a turbine which was calculated to drive a steamship sixty miles an hour with a speed of fifteen thousand revolutions upon a pressure of one hundred and twentypounds to tho square inch. The new invention hits just reached ten thousand revolutions when the outer easing burst.

The fragments tlew in all directions. Allsopp was struck on the left temple and instantaneously killed. Jlis assistant and twenty workmen had some remarkable escupes.
