Matawhero School Concert.

, | A most successful concert was given ,J in the Matawhero school - room on Thursday evening in aid oi the school funds, there being a crowdod j attendance. The room was most tasteI fully decorated with lillics and foliage, ; i and presented a most attractive uppear- ! | anee. Mr R. M. Birrcll, Chairman of the ; Committee, presided, and proved an ex- . ccllcnt Chairman. After a well-played j overture by Mesdames Baty and Muir | (piano) and J. Mucfarlane (violin), Miss I Iloaney contributed the song “As Your I Hair Grows Whiter,” which was given with much expression. Mr Doyle was 1 i most successful in his comic songs and I sketches, being three times recalled. Miss 1 Buchanan was encored for her song “ My i Curly-headed Baby,” which was given in I a pleasing stylo. The club drill b,y pupils ! under Miss Stephenson, who presided at ; the piano, was an excellent item, the children going through their performance |in a most creditable manner. Mr Peterj sou, a visitor from Auckland, sang “ A : Bird in a Gilded Cage,” which was j warmly applauded. A piano duet by i Mesdames Baty and Muir was tastefully j rendered. As a reciter Mr Phil Sheridan ! is hard to beat, and the manner in which he gave “ Hanging a Picture ” won for I him the hearty plaudits of the audience, |an encore being demanded. Mr R. Cogar i greatly pleased the audience with his song, j “ The Little Hero.” A recitation, entitled | “ The Inventor’s Wife,” was given in ox- | cellent style by Miss Langford, whilst Mr I M. Petersen’s second song, “ Only a Leaf,” ! was received with much applause, the I singer having to repeat the last verso, j Miss Buchanan’s rendering of the song I “ Melons ” took exceedingly well with the ! audience. The accompaniments were ! played by Mesdames Muir and Baty and Misses Heaney and Stephenson. A comedy, “ A Match for a Mother-in-law,” was then staged by a number of Gisborne amateurs. The characters were splendidly interpreted, and the piece went off without the slightest hitch. A dance followed the concert, and was largely attended. The committee who had the arrangements of the concert in hand, are ' to be congratulated upon the success of their iff,Us. Amongst those present were many visitors from Gisborne and ! elsev/hc-io.
