HAWKE'S BAY SHOW.
■THE BEST HELD IX THE PROVINCE. By Telegraph—Tress Association. X spier, last night. Tho Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s annual show commenced to day. The show is the best ever held in the province, both in the number and quality of exhibits. The show of cattle was exceptionally good, ii ! being generally conceded that the Shortj horns could not be beaten in the colony, | while in tho general excellence of the | cattle exhibits the opinion was expressed | that the show would rank with the CanI terbury Metropolitan Show. There were j some very tine Hercfords, Jersey, Ayrshire and Alderney cattle shown. 1 There was a splendid entry of ! sheep, the Lincoln classes bringing to- | gather the pick of the North Island i docks of this breed, well-known breeders i as Hon. J. D. Ormond, Messrs T. Tanner, : E. J. Watt. Hugh Campbell, A. N. Mc-
Lean, Perry Bros., and Raynor Bros. I competing. The other breeds, with the j exception of merinos, were also well reI presented, Messrs Janies Stuckey and j S. R. Lancaster being the principal prize- ! takers in South Downs. .Messrs Nelson j Bros., A. N. D. McLean. Hugh Campbell, and P. C. Thrc-Ikeld in English l.eieesters, j while the Hon. J. D. Ormond, Messrs ! Nelson Bros., and E. .1. Watt divided j honors in the Border Leieosters. There was considerable competition in the | Romney Marsh classes, Messrs W. R. j Alien, J. Sykes, F. Hutchinson. B. Chamj bers. and li. If. Mackenzie sharing the I awards. Draught horses and thoroughbred stock wei'e the best ever shown.
The following were the championship awards Sheep : English, Leicester raui, Nelson Bros.; English, Leicester ewe, Nelson Bros.; Border, Leicester ewe, ,1. 1). Ormond ; Lincoln ram, B. and W. 1 Rayner: Lincoln ewe. J. D. Ormond. I Cattle: Shorthorn bull, Archdeacon] Williams’ Duke of Dorrimm ; Shorthorn cow, Archdeacon Williams. Duchess of Connaught. Horses: The championship for thoroughbreds was awarded to the lion. J. 1‘). Ormond’s Sir Lancelot. Draught Clydesdale sire, R. D. D. McLean’s Loch Lomond. Tho hunters’ jumping competition was won by King Jimmy, belonging to Miss Reynolds, of Gisborne, Mr G. L. Sunderland’s well-known hunter, The Sinner, being second. Tho attendance was the largest ever seen on the ground on a first day, being almost as great us is usually seen on the people’s day. With fine weather for the second day, it is anticipated there will be a record attendance.
