Glorious weather was experienced for the opening day of the H.B- Jockey Club s sprini' meeting, which commence yes er day. There was a very large attendance, . including many visitors from all parts ol the colony. The fields were fairly large and the racing good, the fifteen two-y earolds who faced the starter in the Hastings Stakes constituted one of the finest fields of juveniles yet seen in the colony, and several of the competitors will be oun . playing a prominent part in futuie c assie races. Nonotte got his head in front and looked like staying there to the finish, but lie was challenged by Perfection and Okoari in the straight, and the last named coming on full of running, won comfortably by three lengths from Perfection, who was less than half a length in advance of Nonotte, with The Shannon close up fourth. AUSTRALJAN RACING. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Melbourne, Oct. 5. Vocalist was sent a good spin on the siuid once round, which ho finished in 2.bb. Grusspnn, with Kuhn up, boat Lord Rudolph over half a mile, which was run in 51see. Dreamland (Ross) ami Startler (Lewis) galloped a mile and a quarter, both being ridden out in 2.2 L San Fran went freely over a mile in 1.50 Hautvillers and The Bride were associated in a mile and a quarter spin which occupied 2.18.1. Lucknow swept over six furlongs in 1.20. Warrior and Caravel were restricted to a mile, for which 1.58 was registered. Orange Lass was sent a similar journey on tho sand, taking 1.05. Rickshaw put in a sound mile and a half working gallop. Lady Grafton, with Kohinc, gallopod a mile, the last six furlongs of which occupied 1.28. La France, with the assistance of Rely, ran a mile in 1.48.1, and Bonnie Chiol taking a quarter of a second longer. Compass dul a similar distance. Rescued covered a mile easily in 1.5 b.

Wagering over the Caulfield Cup is quiet. Auipicr, before winning the Stand Handicap at Fiemington to-day, was backed on behalf of tho stable for the chief event at Caulfield to win A’sooo, and the best price now obtainable about him is 12 to 1. Combat has been backed at 10UO to 80. G rasspan has receded to 16 to 1, owing to his defeat by Haymaker.

VICTORIA RACING CLUB, DEFEAT OF GRASPAN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Oct. 5. At the Victorian Racing Club’s meeting to-day the chief event was the October Stakes, Haymaker being lirst. Graspan led into tho straight, but Haymaker swept away in a dashing style, winning finally by live lengths. Time 2.10.
