WAIROA NOTES.

(Times Correspondent.) TUB RIFLE CLUB. A meeting of the Wairoa Rifle Club was held at Hewitt’s Hotel on tho 26th inst., to discuss the advisability of winding the Club. Present: Mossrs i J . Wilson (Chairman), Davis, Chapman, Gilligan, Smyth, Cosgrove, Fitzpatrick, and T. S. Hewitt. It was proposed by Mr Chapman, seconded by Mr Smyth, that the affairs of the Club be wound up, and that members in arrears bo asked to settle at once. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Chapman, seconded by Mr Davis, that all the proceeds of tho Club, with the exception of the shed and targets, be fired for by tho volunteer corps and rillo clubs that may bo formed in tho district within tho next two months. It was agreed that tho shod and targets be handed over to the Hurumua Mounted Rifles. It was also decided that 10 men bo a team from each club to compete for the cash proceeds of tho club, and that the ranges be two, three, and fivo hundred yards. The following wore appointed a committee to arrange date and details of the match: Messrs Chapman, Gilligan, and Fitzpatrick (Riflo Club), Smyth, Hewitt, and Cosgrave (Hurumua Mounted Rifles). A vote of thanks to the chair terminated tho meeting. WAIROA RACING CLUB. The annual meeting of tho Wairoa Racing Club was hold in the Secretary’s office on Friday evening, the 27th inst. The following members were present : Messrs T. Carroll, President (Chairman), P. Crcrcr, R. Smyth, Dr. Somerville, 11. Sutnmerfield, T. Hewitt, G. Britnell, P. Cosgrove, Hague, and F. Parker. Tho minutes of last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The report and balance-sheet were then read. Tho balance-sheet showed :

Receipts : Balance to credit, September, 1900, £4O Ss lid ; subscriptions. £2B Is : entries, .£'lll 10s 6d; sale of horse by auction, £l9 10s ; privileges, £173 19s 6d ; 1 totalisator, .£343 11s 10J ; rents. £bb los: interest on fixed deposit, £- os : fixed deposit matured, £75 -total receipts. £829 Is 9u. Expenditure : Stakes paid. £O6B 10s; fees (kandicapper, starter, and officials), £27 18s: advertising, stationery. I etc., £22 8s ; rent, £45 : totalisator tat. ; A £59 11s 7d; Wairoa Band, £8 ; stewards' I luncheon, £8 4s; trap hire, £4; T. j Carroll, for keeping course, £5 : conference levies, £5 0s 6d ; salaries, Secretary, ~ 1900. £25, 1901 £lO : timber, cartage. k work on course, material, insurance, etc., £•33 g 3; telegrams, postage, etc., £3 10s 5d ; cheque book, bank fees, and exchange. £1 os 8cl; casli in hand and at bank, less cheques unpresented, £29 7s: fixed , I deposit maturing, £l75 —total, £829 Is 9d. In submitting their annual report and balance-sheet, it will be satisfactory to members to find that the club is in financial position. They have £175 on fixed deposit, and a floating balance at the bank and in hand of £29, with other assets of the value of £l9 15s, with which to commence the new year; less liabilities of about £37, which leaves a credit balance of, say, £l9O. After referring to necessary improvements to the course and buildings, the report continued : —lt seems to be a popular movement that dividends should be paid out on the first and second horse in each event. I would suggest that the club fall into line with this idea —that is to say, where there are five horses, starting in one event. Mr Cohen, of Napier, when last in Wairoa, kindly stated to the secretary that he would give a bracelet of the value of £ls for an event for gentlemen riders, to be put on the next programme. Not to be outdone in generosity, Mr L. O'Donoghue promised to give a second prize of £5 for tho same event. Both these gentlemen have corroborated their oiler, aiul no doubt the members will pass a hearty vote of thanks to them for their : food oilers. It has also been suggested that the club might provide a whip for the successful jockey in tho same race. A hearty vote of thanks is also due to the • honorary surgeons, Drs Somerville and Milno-Thompson, for their professional services to the club. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted. As there was only one nomination each received for the offices of President and vieo-Prcsident, Mr Thomas Carroll was again declared President for tho ensuing season and Mr PI. L. Donnelly vicej President. Mr 11. Johnson wrote, resigning as a member of the Club. Received with regret. The following members of committee were elected for the coming season : Messrs G. Britnell, A. Hague, J. Scrimgeour, T. ITewitt, senr., R. Smyth, P. Cosgrove, F. Parker, A. 11. Beckett, J. IP- - Smyth, R. Crerer. It was decided to hold tho next race meeting on February 4th and sth. The offers made by Messrs Cohen and O’Donoghue, referred to in tho report, were accepted with thanks. ’ An account from Dr. Somerville, and 1\ Cosgrove for £2 2s, audit fees, was disallowed. The Secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club forwarded a petition for signature, re n the right to exclude undesirable persons from meetings held on Recreation reserves. Proposed by Mr Britnell, seconded by Mr Hewitt, “ That this Club endorses prayer of the Canterbury Jockey Club re suggestions contained in the petition, and that all Clubs should have power to exclude all undesirable class of persons from their meetings, whether held on recreation reserves or not. Proposed by Mr Hewitt, seconded by Mr Cosgrove, that a Bracelet event he added to the programme for the forthcoming meeting, for gentlemen riders only, the first prize to be a bracelet the value of £ls, the gift of Mr PI. P. Cohen, the value of £O, tho gift of Mr O’Donoughuc, and that tho successful rider bo presented with a whip the value of 80s, from the Wairoa Racing Club. Tho suggestion in the report for various ® improvements to ground and buildings wore left to tho incoming committee to deal with. Proposed by Mr Carroll, seconded by Mr J. Crarer, that dividends bo paid on tho first and second horses in each event providing that there are five or more starters in such event. —Carried. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Drs Somerville and Milnc-Thomson for professional services rendered last season. Proposed by Mr Hogue, seconded by Mr Hewitt, that the above gentlemen bo reappointed honorary surgeons for next season. —Carried. A vote of thanks to the retiring auditors _ was accorded. It was decided to pay the auditors in future a foe of one guinea each for their services. Messrs Cosgrove and Dr. Somerville wore re-elected auditors. A hearty ; vote of thanks was also accorded to tho ground committee, clerk of scales, treasurer, and other officials of tho club for the manner in which they carried out iy their duties for the past season. r e Tho members of the committee will meet in the secretary’s office on Friday, October 4th. VOLUNTEER MATTERS. y The local mounted corps meet to-day at tho rifle range, when they will do some 6 trench work, besides clearing tho range of all briars and rushes previous to practising 3 for the Coleman Shield. Capt. Thomson has been making arrangements for a telephone to be erected on the range, , between the firing point and the marker’s shelter, so as to facilitate obtaining the result of the shooting. 4 OBITUARY. “ lam sorry to have to record tho death ° at Frasertowu of Mrs Wm. Beckett from ’ consumption, supervening on pleurisy, which took place on Tuesday morning, October Ist. She leaves a husband and nine young children to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday, and was very largely attended, friends - coming from a long distance. CRICKET. Tho Wairoa Cricket Club, which has lain dormant for the past three years, is about to be resuscitated this season. A meeting is to be held this week, when it is 3 to bo hoped a bumper meeting will be recorded. Wairoa Caledonian Society. 1 A committee meeting of the Wairoa Caledonian Society was held in tho Council Chambers, on Wednesday, October 2nd, 1901. A good number of the committee being present. Mr P. Watson took the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Hewitt proposed that the sports he hold on December 27th, the date fixed at - tho previous meeting, viz. December 26th, being found to clash with the Marumavu race meeting, seconded ly Mr A. G. Smith and carried. Re advertising, tho Secretary stated ho had interviewed Mr Timperley, re rate of advertising all business in connection with tho Society for the ensuing year, the price would he .£l2. Proposed by- Mr Elbett, and seconded by Mr Davis, that tho offer of the Guardian be accepted.—Carried. In reference to the ground, the working committee stated they had carried out the duties proposed at the last meeting. Harrowing, rolling, and sowing in seed had been done. Since then more sheep . had been put in, and, owing to the wretched state of the weather, the workhad been utterly spoiled. It was decided ) that the working committee interview the Domain Board, objecting to the manner' in which the lessees of tho ground have destroyed the ground, It was decided that the monthly socials be wound up, and that a long night be held on Wednesday next, October 16th, and that the sum of 2s be charged per couple. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting.
