MINNIE.
’Twas on a sweet spring evening, when The sun on ocean's diadems, Bestowed his rarest sparkling gem ; Came forth the maiden Minnie. The thrush, his dulcet minstrelsy, Harmonious flowed from brooding-tree, His wild-note trilling daintily ; - To welcome maiden Minnie. Arrayed in beauty’s artless style, Symmetric form, her poise and smile, Without a forced, or simpering guile ; In classic grace shines Minnie. Has love e’er charmed, or, tortured yet, Her soul with hope, or, vain regret'? May fate ward off all cause of fret, From heart of pensive Minnie. Nor father's hand, nor mother's care, To soothe a pain, a grief to share ; Their orphan must the wide-world dare ; Sacred’s the maiden Minnie. Sacred the path whereon she moves, Sacred the heart whene’er she loves, Sacred the hand to which she gives, That of the maiden Minnie. G. H, W.
