The bounties payable to French sailing ships are causing a good deal of discussion among English shipowners. Quite a decentsized fleet has been attracted across to San Francisco this season to engage in the wheat trade. Whether this will in any way affect colonial freights remains to be seen. At the middle of June there were 25 French vessels, of a total tonnage of 42,014 tons on the way or entered out for the West Coast of America.
