GREATER GISBORNE.

DISCUSSION AT COUNTY COUNCIL

At the meeting of the County Council yesterdav, a letter was received from Mr \V. D. Lysnar with regard to the amalgamation proposals of the borough and suburbs. He asked that if the Council had any claim against the area which it was proposed to take in, they should meet the Amalgamation Committee in conference. The Chairman said he did not think the Council had any claim. There was only the question of the overdraft. Asked as to the position of the accounts of the two ridings, Haiti and Wluxtaupoko, the Clerk said that they were £2OOO to the bad for six miles of road. The area which they took in in the event of amalgamation was one mile and threequarters. 3 The Chairman said that under those circumstances the matter required to be carefully gone into. He did not wish to put anything in the way of the amalgamation" but seeing that the ridings were so much in debt the Council required to go into the question. The average expenditure per year ou the section of road in Haiti which it was proposed to take from the Council was something over £250. Cr Graham : The Council have been spending more than they received in rates.

Cr Tombleson thought the matter was one that should be referred to the Council’s solicitor. He moved to that effect. The Chairman seconded the proposition. He thought it would be the safest course to adopt, as the manner in which the accounts had been dealt with by the auditor placed the Council in a peculiar position. The motion was carried,
