FOOTBALL.

THE FINAL FOR THE BANNER,

Notes By “The WHISTLE.”

Tun curtain will be rung down on the Rugby football season of 1901 this afternoon at Tucker’s paddock, when the Huia and West End club teams meet in the final match for possession of the Senior Banner. Each of these clubs have won six matches and lost three during the series of Banner fixtures, and a great deal of speculation exists as to who shall prove victorious in to-day’s contest. Both clubs have trained hard during the past week, and the match this afternoon should be worth

going a long way to sec. A charge of one shilling will be made for admission, but the exhibition provided should be well worth the money. The Rugby Union arc, besides, deserving of the support of the public at the present time, as they are expending j£loo on the improvement of the Victoria Domain this season, which should benefit all classes of sport in the district. In order to effect the present

improvements, the officials of the Union have overdrawn to the extent of about .£25, which they hope to make up from the proceeds of to-day’s gates. The Rugby Union have advertised the match in a businesslike way, and we trust that all local sportsmen will roll up this afternoon and, by paying a modest shilling in order to witness .vhat should prove one of the closest and most exciting football contests ever played in the district, aid the Union in their praiseworthy effort to make what Gisborne has never yet had—a good sports’ ground. The following players will represent West End in this afternoon's match : G. Hepburn, G. Nolan, G. Roderick, Gollop, Brown, Watene, Skeot, A. D. Sherrill, Wepiha, Hakawai, Williams, W. Roderick, Davitt, Bennett, L. B. Shcrriff (cuptuin). Emergency—K. Campbell.
