HARBOR BOARD.
Thk monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Messrs Townley (Chairman). Hepburn, Sievwright, Matthewson, and Captain Tucker. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Whinray and Macfarlane owing to ill-health.
In his report the Harbormaster stated : “ On the 3rd lust, tho large red buoy was washed ashore, and a now chain and twoton concrete anchor were taken out and the buoy placed in its original position, as directed by yon. The iron marked Luna
buoy was lifted and taken out to tho Waihora rock to relieve the one that was put on this rock when first discovered by Captain Fairchild. This buoy required to be relieved badly, as some vessel had collided with it, and the buoy was leaking. This collision was never reported io me. The buoy has been cleaned and repaired, and is now ready when wanted. Tho black and white buoy has also been relieved and brought in for repairs, a new buoy and chain taking its piacc. Tho wear and tear on these chains is very considerable, which can be seen by inspecting the one brought in. A new two-ton concrete anchor must be provided, and also a
chain, in ease of accident. The flagstaff which was condemned before I took office over 11 years ago, but which I repaired, is now in a very bad state at the ground and masthead. There is a suitable spar in town which 1 think can bo got at a reasonable price, but before doing anything in this matter I must be instructed by the Board. The present flagstaff was erected over twenty years ago in Captain Chrisp’s time, and cost JE49 10s. I tendered for this work, my price being £SO, Mr C. D. Berry getting the job 10s below mo. I simply mention this as a guide to you in regard to cost. A good part of tho present rigging will come in again for a new one. Soundings : This day at high water (poor tides)—Booft out

The question of cable and anchor was referred to the engineer, also the question of flagstaff. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Sievwright, to make application for a further instalment of TSOOO of the released loan money. The Chairman proposed that applications be called for the position of master of the new dredger, tho Chairman saying that it was not wise to defer tho matter too long. The motion was carried.
The Secretary to the Marine Department wrote, acknowledging receipt of the letter of the 4th inst., forwarding copy of a resolution with regard to the erection of a lighthouse on Tuahine Point, and in reply stating that there are several coastal lights required which are considered to be ruoro urgent than tho one referred to, but the request would receive due consideration.
The letter was ordered to lie on the ;able.
The Chairman stated he had received a telegram from Mr Carroll, stating that the Government had communicated with the surveying warship with regard to the survey of the bay, but had not yet received a reply.
Mr Matthewson said he thought it had been promised that the Kidnappers light should bo next erected, it having been put off for the East Cape light. Correspondence and reports were read in regard to tho dredge.
A resolution of condolence in regard to the death of President McKinley was adopted.
