Assistance Wanted.

Ox the arrival of the Mav.iroa yesterday Captain Smith reported that the East Cape lighthouse signalled yesterday morning: “Want immediate assistance. Deport to Wellington. Sickness.” The local manager of the Union Company, Mr F. Cramond, reported the matter to Mr. Hawley, Collector of Customs, who at once telegraphed to Wellington, with the result that instructions were received to send the steamer Waihi to the East Cape. Tho Waihi left at midnight and will I call in at Waipiro this morning to pick up Dr. Davis. The Waihi will reach the East Cape Island before noon to-day, and word should be received in Gisborne this afternoon as to the reason for the signals being given to (ho Maxaroa.
