THE ALIEN QUESTION
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Sept. 25.
Mr Barton has announced that the Treasurer will deliver liis Budget speech on October Bth. The Tariff will be submitted the same evening. Tho Immigration Restriction Bill is in Committee. A Government amendment was moved with the view of preventing any embarrassment being thrown on the Imperial Government by specifying that the races be restricted, leaving it to tho Government by resolution to determine the races from time to time. This was more tho outcome of Japan’s influence on the British in regard to Canadian legislation. The debate so far is of a strongly nationalistic tone. Speakers demand insertion of the Japanese even at the risk of the Bill being vetoed.
