Evidence was given that prisoner while in gaol, in the presence of several witnesses. deliberately and unhesitatingly confessed that he had dogged the President for days, seeking an opportunity to shoot him ; that he believed in no form of Government or marriage relations ; every head of State was a tyrant who ought to be killed. Emma Goldman’s teachings had influenced him, but he alone planned the deed, and accepted the [responsibility. Mr Lewis, one of the counsel for the defence, declared the prisoner steadfastly refused to aid them. He was entitled to any doubt. It the jury were able to declare that he was an irresponsible person it would lift from the public mind a great load. The jury returned a verdict of murder in the first degree.
