AVONDALE RACES.

The Avondale Jockey Club opened the season here with the first day ot then Spring Meeting, on the EUersho course, to-dav, when the weather was tine and the attendance good. The innovation of paying out on the iirst and second horses was introduced on the totalisator, and on eight races the sum of 19424 was passed through the machine, an increase on the corresponding day of last year of £4597. lhe results were as follows : -- Maiden Plate Handicap. 6 furlongs.— Glasgow 1 Sparkling Water 2. NOTES ON AVON DALE MEETING

Auckland, last night,
Ideal weather was experienced at Bherslio yesterday tor the opening day of the Avondale Jockey Club's spring meeting. The attendance was large. The new plan of paying dividends on the first and second horses was introduced for the first time. It has taken well by the public. As was anticipated in the Timks, Glasgow proved successful in the Maiden 1 late, j fie was ably ridden by the Gisborne iockey Buchanan. The winner of the hurdle race, Kegalia 11., was also telegraphed to Gisborne as a likely winner, Spalpeen was made a red-hot favorite lot the Avondale Stakes, but Buchanan again proved successful on Messrs A attains two-year-old Grey Seaton. It was doubtful whether the winner of the Avondale Cup, Nonette, could last the distanco. lie is a champion short distance goer, lus \ ictorv proved a surprise to his ahmrers. The favorite, Jewellery, placed to Ins credit the Hack Handicap. Old oltigcur 11., who annexed the Steeplechase, is one of the greatest horses of the day. He is somewhat ancient, and was purchased for a - song." The old grey has proved to bo a profitable speculation to his owner. The Bony Handicap winner, First \\ insper, was onlv purchased recently tor .£l4. Oran "e and Blue was made favorite, and finished nearly last. The Flying Handicap fell to Val ltosa’s lot. The winner of this event was telegraphed to Gisborne as a good tiling. Among tho Gisbormtes present were Messrs Staff, C. D• l*itt, Henderson, Scager Auckland, and Swan.

Sydney, Sept. 22. The City Tattcrsall’s Cup was won by \cetino, Robatto second, and Oauleon third. Seven started. The betting was 2 to 1 against Royal Purple, o to 1 Acctine. Won by three lengths. Time, 2.25 1-5. The racehorse Sirdar has been sold to a Queensland buyer for 500 guineas.
A PROSPEROUS COUNTRY CLUB.

Tolago, Saturday. Tun annual general meeting of the Tolago Bay Racing Club was held in the Tolago Bay Hotel this evening, there being a fully representative attendance. Mr Andrew Beeves, President of the Club, occupied the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and continued, the Treasurer submitted the following report : “ Your committee have plasuro in submitting the report and balance-sheet for the year ending July dlst, 1901. The season was commenced with a credit balance of £6O 2s 7d. The sum of £ls was added to the stakes, and £2O spent in course improvements. The increase in the Club’s general source of revenue for the year amounted to £42. The amount invested on the totalisator was £2OX7, as against £1499 last year, shown" a substantial increase of £5lB. The Club closes the financial year with a credit of £SG 4s. The retiring committee members are Messrs Dixon, Farrell, Morris, and Smith, all of whom are eligible for re-election. On too motion of Air Georgo Dixon, seconded by Air Farrell, the report and balance-sheet was adopted. Reference was made by the Chairman and others present as to tlio pleasing stato of the finances, and also to tho successful nature of tho meeting held last March.
The retiring members of tho Committee were re-clccted, and Mr W. A. l'ullock was added to the Committee. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to tho Committee that tho totalisator should pay on tho first and second horses in events where thero were five or more horses starting.
Three new members were elected. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting.
