Old Soldiers.
iM’o the Editor of the Times )
Sin,—With your permission I would like to correct an evident error appearing in yours of yesterday under the heading of
•• Our Old Soldiers." It is stated that the late Sergcant-at-Arms to the House of Bepresentativcs (Colonel Fraser) rendered valuable services during tho first Maori war at Gisborne, many years ago. Ho was not the man. It was LieutenantColonel James Fraser, of the Hawke’s BaySettlers. who served at Tolago Bay, and whose brilliant career as a military leader in New Zealand was only too short, he having died at Opotiki nearly thirty years ago. The services ol Licu.-Colonel James Fraser and his military settlers on the Fast Coast were only rivallel at that time by those of Von Temsky and his Forest Rangers on the Waikato. The late Sergeant-at-Arms, although an officer in one of the Waikato regiments, was very little known to military fame, and that little was not brilliant. —I am, etc., J.H.S., Late Sergt.-Major H.B. Military Settlers. Ormond, Sept, 20, 1901.
