FOOTBALL.

HAWKE’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Napier, last nigh

The district football match, Hawke’s Bay v. Poverty Bay, was played on the Recreation Ground to-day, in the presence of a largo number of spectators, notwithstanding the fact that no holiday was observed. The game ended in a victory for Hawke’s Bay by 8 points to 6. Both sides secured a couple of tries, the local team converting one. Dclamere got the two tries for the victors, and To Reinga and Williams got over for the visitors. The game was not very interesting, and there was an utter absence of brilliant play, the match being fought out on the old solid principles, with very little passing. Gisborne put on a big spurt towards the finish, but they left the rally too late, and, although they were giving the local men a rather hard tussle in the last five minutes, the defoncc was too good, and they could not increase the score. Byrnes played a fine game at full, and the best of the three-quarters were Porter and Te Reinga. The forwards as a whole did good work.

The visitors, who were the guests of the Rugby Union at “Camille” last night, left for home by steamer to-night, well pleased with their short visit.
