By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. Sir G. M. OTJorke expects to return to Wellington shortly.
Thos. McGovern and Anne Vail- Drake were remanded at the Police Court to-day to Wellington on Friday on a charge of theft. Bail was allowed.
N'apier, last night. In the Supreme Court to-day Andrew Noilson was sentenced to one year for theft. Harry Robinson was admitted to three years’ probation for breaking and entering. Thomas Cahill was admitted to two years’ probation for forgery.
Masterton, last night. C. A. Pinkerton was found dead with his head in a tub containing about eight inches of water, liis hands grasping the sides. A verdict of heart failure and asphyxia was returned. He was aged 05, and leaves a widow and family. He was the first storekeeper on the Grey, and bore a reputation as one of the best accountants in the district.
Wellington, last- night. Quantities of water-worn coal and light timber have been cast up by the sea in the neighborhood of Terawhiti, some of the timber being of the kind used in stowing the cargo of the Union Company’s s.s. Ohau, which was lost between Cook Straits and Lyttelton some years ago.
Mrs Drake, who has been arrested in Auckland on a charge of stealing her husband’s furniture, is alleged to have eloped with McGovern, who was a wharf laborer here, after her husband bad made over to hor a considerable amout of city property.
Henderson, manager of the New South Wales team, has cabled to the New Zealand liugby Union that W. Short-land, a member of the team, died of pneumonia to-day.
Timaru, last night. In the Supreme Court, Judge Denniston congratulated the Grand Jury on the shortness of the calendar, there being only four offenders. Two had pleaded guilty in the Court below. A boy absconder from Burnham, who stole five cheques from his employer’s book, filled up aud passed them, was ordered to be
sent back to Burnham, and to come up for sentence when called upon. A man named Win. Gray, for theft of a cash-box it Ashburton, received a four mouths’ sentence.
The wharf laborers last night drew up a statement of claims to bo laid before employers (shipowners and charterers and stevedores operating here) as the basis of an industrial agreement. It provides for the usual preference to unionists, fixing meal hours day and night, men to be
given ten minutes to cool when hot from other work if sent into a freezer, the cold blast to be shut off during work. Six holidays are named, when the pay is to be 8s an hour. Sunday work -Is. At present the usual rates are Is 8d an hour, and Is 6d overtime on sailors, Is 6d and 2s on steamers. The rate for sailers is proposed to be raised to that on steamers. Railway employes on the wharf aro not affected, as they did not desire it. A ! ong discussion on the rotation system of employment took place, and it" was rosolved not to ask for its adoption. A committee was appointed to lay the proposals before the employers. In the Supreme Court, Wm. Buchanan, an old offender, now undergoing sentence of three years at Dunedin, was sentenced to six months from the termination of his present sentence upon two charges of house-breaking and theft. He pleaded guilty. In one case lie made a haul of jewellery, which he gave to a woman. Dunedin, last night. George C. Elliott, a very old resident, dropped dead outside the Exchange this morning.
Captain Louden, aged 77 years, for many years pilot and signal-master at tho Heads, is dead.
