AUCKLAND NEWS.

Auckland, last night. Trooper George Wilkins, of tho Fourth Contingent of Rough Riders, who returned by the Tagus, died at Auckland Hospital of wounds and injuries sustained in South Africa. His horse fell on him several times.

THE LATE PRESIDENT. Tho sympathy of the people of Auckland was keenly manifest in connection with Mr McKinley's death. From early morning to-day flags were flying nt iialfmast on public and private buildings ; in fact, since the death of Queen Victoria there has been nothing like such a general indication of mourning throughout tho city, At tiie ofiice of tiie United States Consul for New Zealand (Mr Frank Dilingham) during tiie whole day there was a constant stream of visitors hearing sympathetic messages from public bodies and private citizens. Mr Dillingham was much touched by tho sympathy extendod to him by tho people of New Zealand. He personally feels the loss of Mr McKinley, not only as a member ot the United States Consular service, but as a personal friend of the President, and ho states that lie will ever remember the touching and kindly sympathy extended to him by the colonists of Now Zealand. Tiie Stock Exchange closed, and several meetings of local bodies adjourned as a mark of respect.

ALLEGED THEFT.

Detectives to-night arrested, on warrant from Wellington, Thomas McGovern and Ann Mair Drake, on a charge of stealing household furniture and effects to tho value of .£'3ls, the property of David Drake.
