The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, SEPTEMBER 16, 1901. THE MURDERED PRESIDENT.
“ Good-bye, all ! Good-bye ! “ It is God’s way 1 His will be done.” Those were the last words of that great and good man who has passed away, a victim of the fiondish anarchists—the third President who in the land of freedom has been sacrificed by the assassin’s bullet. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot by Eootii, and in IBSI General Garfield was shot by Guiteau. President McKinley was born at Niles, Ohio, on January 29, 1843. Ho was elected President in November, 1896, and last year he was ro-elected for a second term. He declared that he would not take the office again, but little thought then of the fatality that would deprive him of the power to carry out the existing term. Mr McKinley was a man who invariably succeeded in whatever he took in hand. His life publicly and privately was an example for all men. He had been a brilliant soldier, and his successor, Iloesveldt, is also a man of proved bravery. The latter has never given evidence of possessing administrative capacity, but ho has begun well by saying that he will bo guided absolutely by the policy adopted by Mr McKinley. | The McKinley family naturally have wide- J world sympathy in their bereavement.
