An old miner, Paddy Kelly, who has been fossicking at Daylight Creek, New South Wales, had a narrow escape from a horrible death. When sinking a shaft, the side fell in, burying him for several hours till rescued by the police and some civilians. A writer in the Yorkshire Post says : “ The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York to New Zealand has caused a revival of interest in New Zealand. Amidst the indications of progress made by the colony, one point has escaped notice. The existence of the colony is very largely due, like the Protectorate of Uganda, to the Church Missionary Society, the results of which on the Maoris alone j
I made anything like active colonisation possible. But that work has now reached a point at which it can be handed over to the entire care of the Church in New Zealand. Accordingly, I understand, the society will next year cease to find funds for the Maori Mission, and will only continue the personal allowances to the old missionaries in the field. There are now scores of Maori churches and schools maintained by the Maoris themselves, who raise from £'lsoo to £2OOO a year for church purposes."
