Auckland, last night. The half-yearly meeting of the Hibernian Society of New Zealand district, No. 3, at which Southern lodges wore represented, was held to-day. The report stated that the funeral claims paid during the half year amounted to Tl2O, and there was a credit balance of ATSO. New branches have been opened at Wairuate, Westport, and Denniston. Tko membership of the Society is 1143. The funeral fund amounted to 4)441 4s. The following nominations were made : President, Mr Stead ; Vice-President, Mr ' Little ; delegate, Mr Beechan. For tho position of Superintendent of the Auckland Fire Brigade 17 applications have been received. A committee has selected four, from which the appointment will be made by the City Council. The names are : Woolcy (Port Adelaide), Moormar (Melbourne), Hcydon (Melbourne), and Bunn (Melbourne). Wellington, last night. Under the new arrangement of the West Coast railway service the southward express train will from the Ist November arrive at Wellington at 8.15 p.m. daily, saving an hour and five minutes, and will only stop between Palmerston and Wellington at the principal stations. A slower train will leave Palmerston at 4.50 p.m., and arrive at the city at 10.30. The northward express will run as at present.

His Excellency the Governor has intimated his desire to present a challenge cup to the New Zealand Rugby Union, with a suggestion that the’ champion fifteen of the South Island meet the crack fifteen of the North Island at Wellington to decide its possession. Now Plymouth, last night. At tho Police Court this morning, Jas. McCullum, chairman of the Okato School Committee, was fined 10s and costs for disturbing the school by dismissing school during the Inspector’s visit of inspection. The prosecution was tho outcome of trouble between the Board, Committee, and Inspector. The case of the Marlborough Education Board and the Blenheim Committee was quoted, when Judge Edwards held that control of educational matters was in the hands of the Board. Defendant pleaded guilty. Obituary : Octavius Carrington, who arrived at Taranaki with his brother, tho late Frederick Carrington, in the barque Brougham on February 11th, 1841, and assisted in laying out the town.
