MATHESON FOUND GUILTY

ING AT A MAN

By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, last night. At the Supreme Court to-day the jury found a verdict of guilty on both counts against D. Matheson, ex-engineer of the s.s. Oceana, charged with firing a revolver at John Spencer, at tho Bluff, with intent, and with assaulting the same man. The jury was of opinion that the shooting was done under the induence of strong excitement.

His Honor said it was a pity that a man with a good character, and in such a position as prisoner had- held, should be in such a situation. His act, however, was one that could not go lightly punished. Tho sentence was ffve months’ imprisonment.
