LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLOR,
DISCUSSED BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
At the meeting of tho County Council' yesterday the letter from the Chamber of Commerce was read, asking the Board to take part in a conference for the recommending of a gentleman for nomination to the Legislative Council, as suggested by the Premier and Mr Carroll. The Chairman : You know my opinion. I expressed it at the meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday. That Board decided to take no action in the matter, as the appointment of a Councillor is a function that devolves on the Government, and it is not proper for the Local Bodies to interfere in tho matter. Cr Cooper: They have no right to interfere. Cr Hutchinson : Wo have no power to iuterfero at all. Cr Graham: Unless we call for applicants, and send on the names to tho Government. (Laughtor.) Cr Cooper proposed a motion to tho effect that the Government bo requested to make the appointment. Cr King : We admit the necessity of a representative. Or Cooper: It is time we had an Elective Legislative Council. They have it in many other places. The Chairman: It would be contrary to the spirit of democracy to allow Local Bodies to make these appointments, instead of by the people. The motion was agreed to.
