LATE LIEUTENANT LEECE.

(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. Lieut. Lecce, who, there are no grounds for doubting, is referred to in tho cable as being killed in the Soventh Contingent, was an Auckland member of the New Zealand Battery. He went to South Africa as a trooper, but rapidly roso to the position of senior sergeant. For a time he held the rank of quartermaster. Ho resigned it in order to got into the fighting line to see active service. On the New Zealand Battery completing its service, ho remained in South Africa, and was a few weeks ago promoted to a lieutenancy in tho Soventh Contingent. Tho late lieutenant was a good man, and a fearless soldier. He was held in high esteem by officers and men. Deceased was 33 years of age, and was unmarried. His mother, who is a widow, livos at Parnell.
