THE ALEXA WRECK.
DRIFTED ON TO A REEF.
A REAL SURPRISE AT SURPRISE ISLAND.
THE MEANS OF ESCAPE COME TO HAND.
By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyr'ght Sydney, Aug. ‘27. Details of the wreck of the barque Alexa at Surprise Island show that she drifted on to a reef during a hurricane. The crew of ten effected a landing with much difficulty in the only boat left after the storm, the Alexa then breaking up. Part of the crew reached Now Caledonia in their own boat. The remainder found a boat that had drifted ashore from a passing vessel, and started for Noumea. After being nine days at sea and suffering great- hardships, they were picked up by a steamer sent- in search of them.
A strange feature of the affair was that the boat, after drifting some hundreds of miles, should opportunely be stranded at Surprise Island, and fall into the hands of the castawavs.
The mate returned to the wreck to look after the interests of the owner. The captain came on to Sydney to report to the underwriters.
