[Notes By “Biffkr.”|
’ s The fact that in the columns of this o morning’s Times appears a notice summoning the first annual general meeting 11 of the Ormond Cricket Club for Saturday e evening next Reminds us that the cricket 1 season is approaching, and that it is time we fished out our cricket bats and gave them a touch of oil. The Ormond men - ] are wisely taking time by the forelock. It is half the battle to get the machinery of a c.’ub in smooth running order early in the season, and this the Ormond men are determined to do. Last year was the first season of the Ormond Club’s existence, and tiie fact that they only lost two matches during the season—and these only by the narrow margin of a few runs —proved what a successful season they had. They were only beaten for the Challenge Shield by four runs by the Gisborne “B ” team. They had a very even eleven, and possessed scarcely any “ tail," and the secret of their success was the enthusiasm displayed by both officers and players in the welfare of the Club. I had a chat the other day with Mr J. A. Cwsar, the popular President and Secretary of the Club, in the course of which he informed me that he had a most satisfactory report and balancesheet to present at Saturday evening’s meeting. The Ormond Club, he informed me, would have the assistance during the I
approaching season of practically all last season’s players, while he added with a pleased expression of countenance that they would spring one or two “ darkhorses ” on the town players. Last season’s captain, Air E. Jardine, is expected back from England shortly, and everything points to a most successful season. Mr Caesar intends to again place his fine paddock at the disposal of the club as a playing-field, and tells me he hopes to have tennis also going on the ground this season. The town players will have to gird up their loins if they wish to retain possession of the shield this season, as Ormond intends to make a great struggle for the “ ashes.” We hope there will be a large attendance of members at Saturday’s meeting, and that a strong executive committee will be elected for the season. Wo wish the Ormond Club a prosperous and successful year.
