Many ot' the victims of the foundering were asleep, and the impact jammed the state-room doors, which the stewards burst open with axes. The male passengers rushed the six boats, disregarding the women, and pushed off, despite the officers' efforts to stop them, and threats to use axes. Several were drowned while trying to secure gold.
